Why Adobe Acrobat Update fails when Documents folder is moved to network location

I am going to start with a Rant.

By default, several companies use the “My Documents”/”Documents” directory as a repository for their application settings. I find Adobe and APPLE products tend to do this more often then other companies. Things like iTunes and Adobe Reader/Adobe Flash are the top 3 apps that abuse the documents folder.

In all operating systems like Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux users have a profile directory. In that directory, you will find folders like “Desktop”, “Documents”, “Pictures” etc. Most companies with any sense of file management will normally save files in this directory as well. Because most users never venture into the root folder of the profile these folders are relatively safe from people accidently deleting items.

So where can you find your local profile directory? Well in Windows Vista/7 you can find it in “C:\Users\Username”. In my case it would be “C:\users\jared” or “C:\users\jheinrichs” depending on what machine I’m logging on to.

Because companies like Adobe and Apple throw all their profile specific files in the “Documents” directory, people often have issues when they try to update things when this folder has been redirected to a network location. Why would someone want to redirect their Document Directory? Hmmm… Let me see… Does a thing called idiot proof backup come to mind?

The practice of dumping config files to the Documents directory is terrible for many reasons.

If you want to move the location of the documents directory to the network, all of the user’s local software settings also have to be transferred. What I find quite “funny” is the applications that don’t have very good file management, also have the audacity to make users run as an administrator of your LOCAL machine. Because the local account administrator account has no permission on the “network drive”, the update fails!

Another reason I absolutely hate it when applications save their config files to the “Documents” area is that people delete files in the documents folder all the time! You might laugh but I’ve heard several times “What is this Adobe Folder that’s in my documents? I thought it was a virus and I deleted it.” or “I never put the file in my documents directory so I just deleted it!”.

Where do companies like Adobe and Apple get the right to start completely messing around with best practices? I can see how Apple wouldn’t care if the Windows version messes things up but Adobe doesn’t directly compete with Microsoft!

Now that you know why Adobe Acrobat Update fails what can we do about it?

There is two ways of dealing with this issue:

In my opinion the easiest and most convenient way is to open a command prompt as administrator.

To do this I recommend doing the following:

  1. Click the START ORB – then type “CMD”.
  2. DON’T HIT ENTER
  3. Right click on “CMD” in the search results
  4. Click run as “Administrator”.

Adobe Acrobat Update fails when Documents folder is moved to network location 01

You should now have a command prompt box open. If you type “Net Use” you will see something similar:

Adobe Acrobat Update fails when Documents folder is moved to network location 02

Forget that G: says “OK” right now. See how all the other network drives say “Unavailable”?
That is the reason why you can’t install the update! So how does one make it say “ok”?

I thought you’d never ask!

You just have to run a command to re-connect the drive as the local administrator. To do this type:

“net use x: \\server_name\share_name /persistent:yes”

If I were to use the i: in the screenshot as an example I would type: “net use i: \\server\installs /persistent:yes”.

Another way to deal with this issue is just to Temporarily move the Documents folder back to the local drive while you run the update. Once the update is done, set the folder redirection back.

**NOTE** – It will recommend you move the files. Make sure NOT!!!! to do this.

Apply the update you are needing. Once done you can re-direct the Documents folder again to it’s original location.

**NOTE** – Again It will recommend you move the files. Make sure NOT!!!! to do this.

How to Toshiba System Restore

Toshiba laptops from mid 2007 onwards dont have a recovery disc supplied with a purchase of a laptop. Instead, Toshiba has added a hidden partition on the hard drive which contains the same files on a recovery cd/dvd.

To reinstall your laptop to the factory settings / "out of the box" settings, please follow these steps. It worked for me, and should work for you.

ALL DATA WILL BE ERASED ON YOUR HARD DRIVE IF YOU PROCEED. YOU WILL NEED TO ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE THE POWER ADAPTER PLUGGED IN. DO NOT SWITCH OFF OR RESTART YOUR COMPUTER DURING THIS PROCESS.

  1. Hold down the power button for 10 (ten) seconds to switch off your machine.
Please note: Holding down the power button on the machine forces it to switch off. Any unsaved data will be lost.
  2. Press and hold the 0 (zero) key and at the same time, tap the power button once to switch on your notebook.
  3. When the machine Starts beeping; release the 0 key.
  4. When prompted by the warning screen; select Yes to continue with the system recovery.
  5. Select Recovery of Factory Default Software; click Next.
  6. Select Recover to out-of-box state. Click Next again.
  7. Click Next to Start recovery.

I hope you find this step by step solution helpful for you.

Where to buy scrubs for nurses

I’ve had the pleasure of look at some of the best designed surgical scrubs for men. In my own opinion I’ve never thought scrubs look all that nice, this until I saw some of the products on the Blue Sky Scrubs webpage. Since I am very tall (6 foot 4”) I always look to see if a company cares about the taller folk! I was quite impressed as they sell scrub pants tall. As much as the men’s outfits look and feel night it’s really the women’s scrubs where blue Sky will own this market.

The women’s scrubs are hip looking and help the nurse look and feel more youthful.

If you think that online stores don’t have sales think again! Blue Sky Scrubs always has scrub sets on sale! Honestly I recommend checking this site out. How can you beat low prices and good looking scrub sets?

The Medical Scrubs that Blue Sky scrubs sells are made with the highest quality fabric. Unlike so many other clothes blue Sky likes to keep the jobs at home. Another thing that helps set Blue Sky Scrubs apart is the designer stiches!

Let me know how you like them by leaving a comment when you order a pair!

How to restore files from Norton Backup Exec

This how to article will go over how to restore files from Norton Backup Exec. I know non-techies have a really hard time grasping backup tape drives. This How to will go over a very basic setup where the server is doing a FULL backup every night. Based on that scenario I will go over how to restore the files from the tape.

Open Norton Backup Exec

You first need to select the backup and then catalog the media. To find the backup you have to look at the date of backup. Next Right click the backup and select “catalog media”.

How to restore files from Norton Backup Exec 01

This process normally takes around 5-10minutes. You will notice that the icon for the media if selected propperly will turn to a green play icon. The name of the Media Location will also be shown. On the server I am working at the Media location is just called IBM1. The backup tape drives normally make a bit of noise when it is going through the tape. This is to be expected.

How to restore files from Norton Backup Exec 02

You can monitor the Catalog task by clicking on the “Job Monitor” list.

How to restore files from Norton Backup Exec 03

When it is done the task will no longer be in the Job Monitor section:

Near the bottom of the page there the logs of the Catalog. As you can see for it took 4:51 minutes to catalog the tape.

How to restore files from Norton Backup Exec 05

Click on “Job Monitor” to monitor the restore job. Much like the Catalog you’ll see a log at the bottom of the screen letting you know if the restore was successful.

You will notice that when restoring to say even the desktop\restore folder.

Keep in mind that the folder structure is kept like you restored it to the root of the partition from which the backup was done.

Movember–Men’s health month

This month is Movember! I will be posting pictures of my mustache her as well as links to my Movember page where you can donate money to a good cause!

Where to donate?

Jared’s Movember Donation page – This is the best and fastest way of donating to the cause. If you can’t donate but want to be involved there is several other things that you can do.

How am I donating?

I plan on giving a monetary donation for the cause. I am also going donate to Movember 1/2 of the ad revenue will be donated by myself to Movember. The other half will be donated to Micah’s school fund that we setup for him.

Where do I find the advertisements?

On all the single pages of my website (ie. Blog entries) I have advertisers that I get paid per click. While I don’t recommend clicking on things just for the sake of clicking I do recommend that you look at some of the advertisements that are of interest to you.
