Are you getting the error “Adobe Illustrator has detected a problem in the windows registry which needs to be corrected to work properly. Would you like Illustrator to correct the problem now”? If you are it is because Adobe’s update software did a number on some settings.
The only way I have found to get rid of that error message “Adobe Illustrator has detected a problem in the windows registry which needs to be corrected to work properly. Would you like Illustrator to correct the problem now?” is to:
- Close all CS5 applications
- Right click shortcut to Adobe Illustrator Cs5
- Tell it to run as Administrator.
- This will give enough permissions for Adobe to fix the registry items that it corrupted in the first place!
As you can see when I right click “Adobe Illustrator” I am prompted with the “Run as Administrator”.
Let me know if this helped you fix the error “Adobe Illustrator has detected a problem in the windows registry which needs to be corrected to work properly. Would you like Illustrator to correct the problem now?”

Wow! Worked like a charm. Glad I didn’t go down any of those other roads that had talked about numerous registry changes, registery cleaners, re-installing, etc.
Thanks!!!

Thanks. I love the Adobe software but their install and uninstall is atrocious. Come on Adobe.

That worked! How simple! Thanks for posting this solution. It wasn’t a big deal, but an annoying issue. And I second the opinion on how awful Adobe installs are.

Like many others, I ignored this problem for months because answering “yes” and “no” had the same result – nothing!

Simply awesome. I looked over several sites that had me digging in the registry, thought I might as well give this a try before doing anything drastic, and it worked. Simple as that-Thanks!

Also I have found out what you can do is…right click on Illustrators icon, then properties, then tick the little box that says “run as administrator” then click apply. That way you don’t have to right click it every time. It will stay that way. Good luck All

In my case the problem returns to restart my computer. The ultimate solution is to always start it as administrator?

Thanks for taking the time to make this post! Very simple, and worked immediately. Adobe software provides me with a career, but also a lot of frustrations…
Joe Willliams says
Yes, this worked for me. Thank you. Should have known this myself, but I’ve been using Windows so long I still forget about the relatively new security features.
My issue was actually created by McAfee’s Registry Cleaner though. Haven’t had any trouble with Adobe’s installers.
Thanks again!

(Windows 8)
That solved the problem with opening Illustrator. PremierePro CS5 was taking 3 or 4 minutes to open. I chose “Run as Administrator” and now it opens in less than 10 seconds.
A big thank you for the solution.
