To import photos in Lightroom hit “CTRL+SHIFT+I”. The import window will open. On the top right hand side Click on “Apply during import” and select the preset you would like to apply to ALL photos during the import phase.

Click “Import” at the bottom right side of the screen. Lightroom will remember this setting once you have imported at least one picture.

I find I apply these settings on every picture I take except portraits. By entering these values each time I worked on a picture that it was slowing down my work flow. Creating a preset can really remove the mundane tasks and let you work on the artistic stuff.

Luckily Lightroom allows you to make presets. In Lightroom 3 Making a preset is very easy. When creating a preset it’s a good idea to make sure you haven’t applied ANY changes to the picture. I would recommend resetting the picture just to make sure that everything is back to the default settings. The reset button is on the bottom right of the main Lightroom screen when you are in edit mode. The reason you want to reset everything is that all the settings you’ve changed will be saved and applied to the preset.

Now change the settings you would like to have part of the presets. I will be increasing the Clarity and sharpening as per the screenshots above. Once you are happy with the settings you have made click the “+” button on the presets bar.

I would recommend that you click the “Check None” button and ONLY select the items that you have made changes to.

Since I only made changes to Clarity, sharpening, and Noise reduction I will check them off. Hit the “Create” button.

Now you should be able to apply these items with one click on the “JHH – Default Sharpening” preset.

If you are like me and want to be really lazy you can make Lightroom apply this preset during import so you don’t even have to click the “preset” name.

To learn how to do this check out my post “How to automatically apply a preset to a lightroom import”.

Some AntiVirus software blocks call signalling from ConferenceMe. In this case, you will see the message: "Call ended due to network errors". ConferenceMe uses port 80 for signalling. To solve this problem, you can either add the ConferenceMe application as an exception to the virus filter or you can add the IP address of the MCU as an exception to the filter.

TREND Micro OfficeScan Work around for Cisco ConferenceME

The place I got this running at was running Worry Free Business version 6 SP3. This should also be compatible with versions made after 6.

Go to the server on which Trend is installed.

Right Click Notepad and run as Administrator

Open C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Security Server\PCCSRV\ofcscan.ini

Search for: [INI_SERVICE_MODEL_SECTION]

On the line above: [INI_SERVICE_MODEL_SECTION] type this information in:

You will now need to restart your Trend Master Service on the same server. Right Click “Computer” and Click “Manage”

Find “Configuration” – “Services” – and Then right click “Trend Micro Security Server Master Service” and click “Restart”.

Now log into your your Trend web app and go to “Preferences” – “System” – Click “Verify now” under Connections Verification.

This will push the new settings out to the clients. It seems like it takes a while for things to propagate to the clients. I found rebooting the clients 2x’s was the easiest way for forcing the clients to get the settings ASAP. If you want to double check that the settings have actually been applied to the system you can verify it in the Registry.

HKLM – Software – TrendMicro – NSC – TmProxy

You will notice if the settings were successfully pushed through if there are keys created that match the items that were entered in the ini file.

There should be some subkeys created as well.

Here’s an Advanced Photoshop trick that might help you out one day. The trick allows you to target only the most over exposed sections of the picture. This will ensure the rest of the tone and quality in the rest of the picture remain intact.

Once you have the picture in question open click on the Channels tab (normally bottom right hand side in Photoshop).

Holding the Control key down double click the “RGB” layer. I’ve marked with the screenshot with a red “X” where you should click. This will allow you to select ONLY the lightest areas of the picture.

Hit “Ctrl+J” to take the selection you just made and make a copy of it to another layer.

If you click back to the “layers” tab select “Multiply” to darken these areas. If the effect is a bit much you can adjust the “opacity” to your liking. In this example I pulled the effect back by setting the opacity of “86%”.

If this doesn’t bring back enough detail and you want to darken things a bit more just make a copy of the top most layer. Keep copying the layer until you get the image exposure where you want. Hope this helps!

I have been taking a few Lightroom courses and just found out the other day that you can re-brand Lightroom with your own logo or text. In the image above I’ve highlighted in red what you can change. Right now Lightroom 3 is the latest version of the software. These steps will be for the PC. There is a link at the bottom of the page for Mac users.

Open your favorite image manipulation program (photoshop) and create a new document 600px by 57px. Make sure that the image file is no taller then 57px.

Paste your logo into the image. I would recommend that you don’t have any background color. We are going to save the file as a png and because PNG supports transparency we don’t have to worry about if the logo will work properly with Lightroom’s colors.

Make sure Lightroom is open and go into “Edit” – “Identity Plate Setup…”

Check off “Enable Identity Plate”

Use a graphical identity plate

Click on “locate file”

Open the .png file that you created in step #2

Click “Ok”.

Here’s what you should see approximately when filling in the info in Steps 4-7.

Once you click “ok” you will be brought back to the main Lightroom screen. Your logo will appear now like so:

One more trick before I end this post if you hit “F” a couple of times you will cycle through the different Lightroom views. Eventually you should get to the full screenview. Not only do I find editing pictures in this mode much more pleasing, I have also heard when you go to show clients their pictures that it’s less distracting for them as well. Theoretically because you’ve branded the software as your own it will also make you seem a bit more professional as well. Isn’t it nice not seeing the menu bar?

How to change the identity plate on a Mac – http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Lightroom/3.0/Using/WS3DC88623-7951-4bd4-9969-63E4BC7E2A79.html

I was working in Lightroom 3 and one day my brush adjustment markers were no longer showing up! I couldn’t for the likes of me figure out how to make them visible again. Well it turned out I accidently hit a shortcut key and disabled them. I was searching and searching for how to re-enable it. It turns out that Adobe calls these markers “Pins”. Therefor this post is more about how to make the adjustment “pin” visible again!

It’s very easy to do. You need to hit the “H” key. Bellow is an example of several "adjustment markers” when they are visible.

I found the key combo here: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_keyboard/lightroom-keyboard.htm

In a text editor, create a file called SqlBackup.sql, and add the following line:

BACKUP DATABASE [database name] TO DISK = [backup name] WITH INIT

where [database name] is the name of the Maximizer CQL database and [backup name] is the filename and location of your backup file. See the example below:

BACKUP DATABASE EsconaTutorial TO DISK = ‘D:\Escona.bak’ WITH INIT.

In a text editor, create a file called SqlBackup.bat, and add the following line:

Sqlcmd -S -U MASTER -P -i

Where is the name of your SQL Server, is the password of the MASTER user, and is the name and path of the file you created in step 1. See example below:

Sqlcmd -S MYSQLSERVER\MAXIMIZER -U MASTER -P CONTROL -i C:\SqlBackup.sql

Add the Scheduled task.

Go to Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks

Double-click Add Scheduled Task.

Click the Next button.

Click the browse button. Browse to the SqlBackup.bat file you created, select the file and click open.

Choose how often you would like the backup to occur. For example, choose Daily and click Next.

Select the time you want the backup to start. For example, select 11:00 PM and click Next.

In the Enter the user name field, enter [Machine Name]\Administrator, specify the Administrator’s password, and click Next. [Machine Name] is the name of the Maximizer application server.

Click Finish to schedule the backup and close the Scheduled Task Wizard.

Using the above example, a backup of your Maximizer database will occur at 11:00 PM on a daily basis.

This is a simple example and the process will accomplish an automated backup. If you require additional functionality, see the Transact SQL documentation for details on adding functionality to the SQL script.

This is where I am going to document the issue I am having with IE9. “IE9 A problem displaying <website> caused Internet Explorer to refresh the webpage using compatibility View”

This issue is driving me nuts. To give you an idea on my configuration I have:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

i7 processor

eVGA x58 Motherboard (Latest BIOS and drivers)

6GB of 1600Mhz Ram

MSI 460 GTX Hawk.

These are the things I have tried fix the issue. All previous versions of Internet Explorer displayed the same pages without issues. Firefox, Chrome and Safari aren’t having any issues.

I installed the demo of IE and removed

Installed IE9 Beta and Removed

Installed IE9 RC and Removed

Fully Patched/Up to Date. Removed IE9 again and re-installed.

Updated BIOS

Updated Nvidia driver

Tried disabling all 3rd party add-on running IE9.

Tried running without any add-ons and this did nothing.

Turned off using GPU in IE9 by going to Tools-Options-Advanced and turned off option.

Made sure there was no spyware/Adware/Virus

Just some of the sites that are causing me the issues:

http://www.catswhocode.com/blog/

http://davidwalsh.name

http://downloadsquad.switched.com/

I originally hypothesized that the issue was caused by code on the websites I was visiting were improperly targeting Internet Explorer. I found it weird at least 50% of the site were having issues.

I no longer think that is the correct. I did a test on a client’s dell. There is no issues what so ever with the same sites. The machine was a Dell that uses an Intel Onboard video card.

The other thing that I was thinking that could be causing the issues:

Knowing that IE9 uses the video card so much more makes me think that maybe it could be the driver/video card

IE Add-on that is causing the issues.

Anyone else getting this error? Have you tried something else? Leave a comment.

I just setup my own Zarafa webmail server. For those that aren’t in the know Zarafa is Linux’s equivalent to Outlook Web Access (OWA). I like all the hard work that Zarafa has put into the software. Their name however is scattered all over the place. Companies also like to rebrand items with their own logo etc.

Let’s say you want to re-brand Zarafa with your own images. Can this be done? Sure! It’s opensource!

In this “How to” article on Zarafa I am using Zentyal as the distribution. These files may be located in another directory if you are using a different distro. For you that are using a different distro and have it working then you should check your apache virtual server config files.

On my server the files needed are located in this directory:

There are 3 main files that need editing:

login.jpg (Full Webmail Client)

zarafa_top_logo.gif (Full Webmail Client)

favicon.ico (Icon displayed in the URL Bar)

Here’s some example of how I changed mine.

How you go about changing those files is up to you. The easiest way to do that is to create a Samba share directly pointing @ the directory noted above. Make sure to remove the permissions once you have finished editing the files.

You could also copy it to another share on the server. Using the copy command “sudo cp” you could copy the files from the share you copied the files to, to the folder that was mentioned above.

Here’s a few screenshots of the new files in action:

Hope this helped you figure out how to re-brand Zarafa to your liking.
