Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded

Ever get the error: “Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded”? You will normally only see this error if you are on a server or your network administrator has played a really mean joke on you.

To get rid of the error “your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded” you must follow these steps.

  • Open Internet Explorer browser
  • Go to Tools menu
  • Select Internet Options
  • Go to Security tab
  • Select Internet zone
  • Click on "Custom level…”
  • Under Downloads category, enable the option "File download"
  • Under Miscellaneous category, select Prompt (recommended) for the option "Launching applications and unsafe files"
  • Under Miscellaneous category, select Prompt (recommended) for the option "Launching programs and files in an IFRAME"
  • Validate the changes by clicking on OK
  • Leave the Internet Options
  • Close the browser
  • Re-open it, this issue should be fixed

After doing all this you should never have to worry about seeing that pesky error: “Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded”.

*NOTE* – I don’t recommend doing this on a production server! You should always download items on your workstation using a non-admin account. I only recommend doing this on test servers or Server->Workstation conversions where the security isn’t really needed as much.

Favorites refers to a locations that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network.

This error usually happens after a person acidentally moves the Favorites folder to another folder like Documents or Pictures. To fix this go to:

C:\users\%usesrname%\

*Replace %username% with the actualusername of the user who is having the issue.

Once you do find the folder “Favorites” right click it and select properties.

image

Click on the location tab. Then Click on the “Restore Default”  button.

image

If you know where you acidently moved the favorites to move them back to the Favorites directory.

You will now be able to use your favorites in Internet  Explorer.

Comparing how IE, Firefox and Chrome handle RSS Feeds

I typically use Internet Explorer for most of my browsing needs. I have always found that IE handles RSS feeds better then most of the other browsers. The biggest let down is from Google’s Chrome believe it or not!

FAIL Grade

Google chrome get’s a fail because it can not detect an RSS feed. I would have hoped if the browser can’t understand it, at least program the darn browser to add the feed to your Google “IG” account with one or two clicks.

image

Pass Grade

Firefox does a good job at displaying the data of the RSS feed. It however can not get top marks because although it does know how to display the output it doesn’t understand the META text of the categories from the RSS feed. I actually like the look of the HTML layout in Firefox the best but it does have rendering issues if you make the window too small.

image

Gold Standard

Internet Explorer might not have the speediest javascript engine out there, but it does in my opinion understand RSS feeds the best. Just look. It knows that my blog limits 10 posts to the RSS feed. It also understands that I have different categories in each on of my posts. Even if make the window really narrow the contents are not effected the way they are in Firefox.

How to create a custom search in Internet Explorer 8

Why does it have to be so hard!

I couldn’t find anything that showed me how to do this for Internet Explorer 8. You basically do it the same way as Internet Explorer 7 but unfortunately Microsoft no longer gives you an easy way of doing this anymore. I have documented how to do this.

Step 1: Left click on "Windows Internet Explorer"

image

Step 2: Left click in “New Tab” button in Internet Explorer

image

Step 3: Left click on “Address bar” in Internet Explorer

image

Step 4: Click Address title bar. Enter this address “http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/searchguide/en-en/default.mspx” and hit “Enter” to go to this website.

image

Step 5: Go back to the website you want to create the custom search for. In my case I click back on the my Blog’s Tab.

image

Step 6: Left click on “Search box”.

image

Step 7: Input in “Search Box” the word “TEST” and hit “Search”.

image

Step 8: Select URL text in address bar. In my case it was “http://jaredheinrichs.com/?s=TEST”

image

Step 9: Hit “Ctrl+C” to COPY the text of the URL.

image

Step 10: Go back to the “Add Search Provider page” you opened in “Step 4”

image

Step 11: Left click the Text box in Step 3.

image

Step 12: Hit “Ctrl+V” to enter “http://jaredheinrichs.com/?s=TEST” in the step 3 text box.

image

Problem Step 13: Left click on “Sepcify a name for the search provider”.

image

Step 14: Enter name for the name of the search provider. This name is what is going to show up when you click on the search provider box.

image

Step 15: Left click on “Install button”

image

Step 16: Left click on “Add” button. If you want to make this your default search engine you may do this now by clicking the “Make this my default search provider” box.

image

Step 17 -  Left click on the search box drop down arrow

image

Step 18: You will now see the search provider "Heinrichs Family Blog" as a selectable search provider. Now without actually having to go to the page. Enter some text to search. You can now search the entire site from the comfort of your browser window!

Happy Searching!
