I typically use Internet Explorer for most of my browsing needs. I have always found that IE handles RSS feeds better then most of the other browsers. The biggest let down is from Google’s Chrome believe it or not!

FAIL Grade

Google chrome get’s a fail because it can not detect an RSS feed. I would have hoped if the browser can’t understand it, at least program the darn browser to add the feed to your Google “IG” account with one or two clicks.

Pass Grade

Firefox does a good job at displaying the data of the RSS feed. It however can not get top marks because although it does know how to display the output it doesn’t understand the META text of the categories from the RSS feed. I actually like the look of the HTML layout in Firefox the best but it does have rendering issues if you make the window too small.

Gold Standard

Internet Explorer might not have the speediest javascript engine out there, but it does in my opinion understand RSS feeds the best. Just look. It knows that my blog limits 10 posts to the RSS feed. It also understands that I have different categories in each on of my posts. Even if make the window really narrow the contents are not effected the way they are in Firefox.

Why does it have to be so hard!

I couldn’t find anything that showed me how to do this for Internet Explorer 8. You basically do it the same way as Internet Explorer 7 but unfortunately Microsoft no longer gives you an easy way of doing this anymore. I have documented how to do this.

Step 1: Left click on "Windows Internet Explorer"

Step 2: Left click in “New Tab” button in Internet Explorer

Step 3: Left click on “Address bar” in Internet Explorer

Step 4: Click Address title bar. Enter this address “http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/searchguide/en-en/default.mspx” and hit “Enter” to go to this website.

Step 5: Go back to the website you want to create the custom search for. In my case I click back on the my Blog’s Tab.

Step 6: Left click on “Search box”.

Step 7: Input in “Search Box” the word “TEST” and hit “Search”.

Step 8: Select URL text in address bar. In my case it was “http://jaredheinrichs.com/?s=TEST”

Step 9: Hit “Ctrl+C” to COPY the text of the URL.

Step 10: Go back to the “Add Search Provider page” you opened in “Step 4”

Step 11: Left click the Text box in Step 3.

Step 12: Hit “Ctrl+V” to enter “http://jaredheinrichs.com/?s=TEST” in the step 3 text box.

Problem Step 13: Left click on “Sepcify a name for the search provider”.

Step 14: Enter name for the name of the search provider. This name is what is going to show up when you click on the search provider box.

Step 15: Left click on “Install button”

Step 16: Left click on “Add” button. If you want to make this your default search engine you may do this now by clicking the “Make this my default search provider” box.

Step 17 - Left click on the search box drop down arrow

Step 18: You will now see the search provider "Heinrichs Family Blog" as a selectable search provider. Now without actually having to go to the page. Enter some text to search. You can now search the entire site from the comfort of your browser window!

Happy Searching!

Everyone is trying to unblock websites like Myspace.com or Facebook.com since so many jobs are blocking those sites. Unfortunately you will find that most jobs and schools will block the latest sites that prevent censorship. One website has begun to use a new method for unblocking websites by hosting a decentralized network that allows multiple people to host nodes that others can use as proxies from inside of their browsers and then get around the censorship that your school or job might be forcing on you.

www.dontcensorme.org lets you browse the web uncensored using it’s collection of suffix proxy servers. Suffix proxy servers are chosen, because they are easier to use than regular proxy servers.

A suffix proxy server allows a user to access web content by appending the hostname of the proxy server to the URL of the requested content. To use a suffix proxy server with hostname “6a.nl” to visit “www.google.com” you simply enter “www.google.com.6a.nl” in your browsers address bar.

Don’t censor me” uses proxy servers meant to bypass censorship, not for anonymous Internet access or protecting your privacy. Every request the proxy makes for you will contain your IP address in the “X-Forwarded-For” header.

The consequence of using a proxy (in general) is that you send all your data unencrypted through some other server. The person running this server can look at or into your traffic. Therefor DO NOT log in to any accounts (not even using a secure connection) unless you FULLY trust the person running the proxy server.
