Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today about upgrading your custom vanity domain name (CVDN) email account(s). To recap our conversation for you:

MTS will upgrade your email service on the evening of April 15.

Please make the setting changes below to your email client prior to April 15, 2010. Please do not remove your existing settings until after April 15 as this will cause you to stop receiving email. After your email has been upgraded successfully you must remove your old pop.mts.net settings.

Setting information:

POP Server: mail.mtsbiz.net

POP Port: 995

SSL Enabled: Yes

SMTP Server: mail.mtsbiz.net

SMTP Port: 587

SSL Enabled: Yes

SMTP Authentication: Yes

IMAP Server: mail.mtsbiz.net

IMAP Port: 993

SSL Enabled: Yes

For help configuring your email client, go to http://www.mts.ca/businessemailsettings for step-by-step instructions.

There will be a ten-day freeze for email administration changes between April 5 and April 15. If you make administration changes (e.g.: adding new or removing old mailboxes, changing a mailbox password) during this time, they’ll need to be made again after the upgrade is complete.

To avoid error messages, your old email settings must be removed after the cut-over date.

For mailbox access and management after April 15, login to Easymail (Website OS) at http://hosting.mtsbiz.net. Login using your domain and password, click Email, then click Easymail Setup 3.

If you had previously acquired additional email products (e.g.: additional email accounts or an email hosting plan) you may notice a change on your monthly invoice. In all cases, these changes will reflect an amount equal to or less than the amount shown on your previous invoice.

As a CVDN email webmail user, please remember to back-up your webmail messages, as they will not be moved as part of the new Business Email upgrade. Starting April 16 to login to webmail you will use webmail.mtsbiz.net

Thanks again for your time. We will email you once more upon successful completion of the upgrade.

If you have any questions, please email us at businessinternet@mtsallstream.com.

I finally got really upset yesterday because the garbage and blue box collectors really suck in Riverheights! I called 311 and complained. I still haven’t heard back from them yet on what is going to happen with the broken garbage containers.

Unfortunately someone had moved some of the garbage can’s out of the way before I took these photos. When I drove home the can’s were located in a similar location to the blue box down the road.

To top it off, when the garbage collectors come they don’t even take all the garbage/recycling. Sometimes they drop the containers and leave the crap all over the back lane as you will see in the pictures.

In this picture you can see how they didn’t pickup someone’s blue box. More garbage on the road.

The Recycling company took all of one blue box, 1/2 of the 2nd and completely missed the third. Oh don’t forget that they just had to leave some of the contents from the first one on the back lane as well. If you look done the lane can I ask how the heck can they just leave a blue box in the middle of the road?

I noticed that my speed had dropped on the Shaw network the last few weeks. The other night around 11:00 when I was working on a client’s machine I suddenly got disconnected from the internet. I noticed my modem was not connecting to Shaw headquarters. The connection came back several minutes later. I noticed that the IP address was no longer the trusty 24.X.X.X IP address I had been used I’ve has a 24.X.X.X IP address for over 8 years. It is now 174.5.X.X. So long 24.X.X.X it was fun knowing you!

Shaw Business Internet gives you dependable POP3, IMAP, SMTP, and Web-based email access. For the technical details and capabilities of these services, check the charts below.

Server Addresses

Server Connect Package
yourname@shawbiz.ca

SOHO Package

Business Package

With own domain:
 yourname@yourdomain.com

With no domain, choice of:
 yourname@shawbiz.ca
 yourname@shawlink.ca
 yourname@shawcable.com

Sending Limits

Maximum outbound message size: Sending through SMTP server
7 MB before encoding
(10 MB total)

Maximum outbound message size: Sending through Webmail
5 MB before encoding
(7 MB total)

Maximum number of recipients per message
400

Maximum number of messages that can be sent per day*
5000

Other Features

Autoreply
Maximum autoreply message length is 400 characters

Forwarding
Messages can be forwarded to multiple email addresses.

Port 25 Filter

Port 25 Filter

Connections made to Port 25 (the standard SMTP port for outbound email) that are not directed toward a Shaw Email server are blocked.
In an effort to reduce the volume of Unsolicited Bulk Email (SPAM), any outbound traffic on Port 25 that is not directed toward a Shaw Email Server is blocked.
If you connect to third-party mail systems to send email you must ensure that you:

Obtain an alternate port number from your third-party email provider

OR

Subscribe to Shaw Business Internet services using a static IP address and DOCSIS modem

Port 25 filtering will NOT affect you if:

You use Shaw’s Email Servers to send email

You only connect to third-party mail systems to receive email, but still use Shaw’s Email Server to send email

You subscribe to a Shaw Business Internet package that includes both a Static IP and a DOCSIS modem

*For the purpose of these sending limits, Shaw defines an email message as a single message sent to a single recipient address. A single message sent to three recipient addresses would therefore count as three messages against the daily limit.

It all started with one of my main clients…

A couple people complained about not seeing the contents of a replied email. The email was basically blank. Instead of showing me an example the “blank” emails were always deleted. I created a test:

Two users:

User A – is at work and uses Outlook all the time for sending and receiving messages.

User B – is more of a road warrior and and likes to use webmail at home or on the road.

Two external accounts outside MTS.

1 Gmail User

1 Shaw Webmail User

Steps taken to re-produce the issue.

This has been done several times and the outcome is very consistent

User A @ work sends User B an email. At the same time they CC the Shaw and Gmail users.

User B uses MTS webmail to REPLY to the email that “User A” just sent. (*A side note* The email format that “user B” received is HTML.)

User B hits reply, they can type in some text say “This is a test”. They send a REPLY back to “User A”

“User A” receives an email when they hit send/receive. If they open the email, the email shows the person’s original email. The line “This is a test” does NOT show up. If the person turns on “Autopreview”. This is the option to see the first few lines on the email in outlook. If you turn on the reading pane or open the email the text is missing.

If “User A” would have gone into MTS Webmail and tried viewing the email on the server BEFORE downloading it they can actually see the text. As soon as they download it’s encoded in such a way that outlook does not display the lines added by MTS’s webmail unless autopreview is on.

If the Gmail user and Shaw Users reply to the SAME email “User a”, they receive the email with “This is a test”.

If “User B” comes back to work and uses Outlook to send the email instead of webmail the result is the same as the Gmail and Shaw webmail.

I tried telling Outlook to view the email as plain text and that didn’t help. I’ve tried this on several computers at the WSO. From the above test it would seem like the MTS webmail corrupts the original format somehow and then Outlook can’t display the output.

How Client A’s Email client is setup

Screenshots of the Issue

This is what it looks like after receiving a “reply from MTS Webmail”. See how the text “This text will not show up from this reply” is in the autopreview? Yet on the right hand side in the email the text is missing. I have marked where the text should show up. (Click image to make it larger).

Here is an Example of a Reply from the same email that was CC’d to a Gmail client who also replied to the email.

Here is an Example of a Reply from the same email that was CC’d to a Shaw client who also replied to the email.

I also have saved these emails to a Outlook PST file just in case.
