How to install memory in a Dell Vostro 1710 Laptop

This post with cover how to install ram in a Dell Vostro 1710 Laptop. The Dell Vostro 1710 laptop uses PC2-6400 Memory and can use different size dimms in the two memory slots on the motherboard.

If you like this article I also wrote an an earlier article on how to replace a Dell Vostro Laptop Hard drive.

I love the Dell Vostro 1710. It’s a 17 inch Laptop that has a Intel Centrino processor and by default runs Windows Vista. The Dell Vostro 1710 is black and is made of plastic. I find that the feel of the machine to feel mid to high end. To replace the Dell Vostro 1710 laptop hard drive please follow these steps.

Things you will need:

  • * Clean work area
  • * Soft Cloth
  • * magnetized Philips Screwdriver (cross)
  • * flathead screw driver
  • * container to hold screws
  • * Anti-static writst strap.

1.) You will need to make sure that the machine is off. I like to lay a towel down under the laptop to prevent the laptop from getting scratched.

2.) Lay the laptop on the towel so the bottom of the laptop is facing the ceiling.

3.) You will have to remove this panel off the back of the laptop. There are 8 screws holding down this cover.

4.) Using a flathead screw driver lift the left side of the Dell Vostro 1710’s memory cover up. You will want to almost peel it from the left to the the right.

5.) If you haven’t already put it on, now would be a good time to put on your anti-static wrist strap. Memory is VERY sensitive to getting static damage.

6.) Here’s a look at the memory I will be using today. 1GB PC2-6400 Memory.

7.) Pickup the new memory / replacement memory and line up the memory to the slots on the motherboard. You want to slide the memory at 35 degree angle like so:

8.) Now that you are sure the memory is slid as far down as it will go. You want to GENTLY push down on the memory and snap it in place. The memory should look like this now:

9.) That’s all folks! Now put back the memory cover back on and you’re done. The BIOS should automatically update it’s information. You might want to re-run the Vista Performance wizard as it will now need updating.

Dell’s website is not nearly as detailed as my review but if you don’t trust me you can always verify my steps from the horse’s mouth.
