My Rating

[wpsm_comparison_table id=”1″]

  • Design – 9/10
  • Hardware – 9.2/10
  • Sound – 9.2/10
  • Value – 9.1/10

The A5+ speakers deliver 50W per channel, sports 13cm kevlar woofers, and 20mm silk dome tweeters. The cabinet has a new port system and heat sink on the rear, which aims to not only improve sound but ensure they’re more efficient at high volume.

Connections

You can connect these speakers to either a 3.5mm jack or RCA connections. In my testings, I used both the 3.5mm jack that was connected to my computer as well as the RCA connections. The RCA connections were connected to my lovely SMSL DAC which connects to my computer via an optical cable. I recommend if you want to get the most out of these speakers that you use a really good quality DAC.

Price

One of the big complaints people have with these speakers is the price. One thing people tend to forget is that the left speaker included an amplifier that was made based on the specs of the speaker. What this means for you is that there is less junk on your desk. When looking and comparing these speakers make sure to realize you are getting powered speakers and an Amp!

Sound

These speakers are one of the best speakers I have ever listened to. The Silk dome tweeters allow crisp highs without fatiguing your ears. You will be able to listen to these speakers all day long! The mids and bass are great. While the speakers have decent bass, I do think that you will want to upgrade the speakers with a good ported sub fairly soon. Audioengine doesn’t claim these speakers to be “real monitors”.  I feel that anyone who will be using these speakers for mixing will find that they perform as good as any other high-end brand with similar sized woofers.

Final Thoughts

You will not be disappointed with these speakers. They look and sound in a league of their own. One of the best things you could do is to make sure that you use a DAC. Doing so will really allow these speakers to shine.
