Today I listened to an amazing speech done by Chris Orwig in one of his training titles. What he said stuck a nerve and really inspired me. I know this doesn’t nearly do the speech enough justice but here was most of the conversation:
Chris said:
Every year I get my students to do something that they normally don’t do. For example one student wore two different shoes. One was blue and the other one was white and she wore them like that for the entire day.
She said to me that Chris, when I went out for the day, I was really self conscience about myself. My senses were heightened. I was noticing everything, I was noticing everyone’s observation of me. She said: “You know what? No one even paid attention.” She said: I think the whole thing was more important to me then anyone else. She said it made me realize I want to take more chances. I want to do more. I loved how it heightened my awareness and observed things I wouldn’t have even noticed.
I think everyone should take a queue from Chris and his student. Do things different every day. Bring an energy to what you do and try to notice what is going on around you. You just might find something special you would have never noticed had you not “taken the chance”.
