Why you should never buy a TOM TOM product…

This marks a sad day for me. I loved my Tom Tom device when it worked. Even after getting stung the first time I bought a second one. This post documents why Tom Tom does not care for it’s customers. I will NEVER buy another Tom Tom device. If you want to get to the really “Good” part skip to the Support of the second device.

Tom Tom One 3rd Edition (Number 1)

The Good

I got this device and loved it. It’s touch interface was amazing and it was one of the first devices to bring “photo radar” detection to the masses. I found that it was also one of the only GPS’s at the time that consistently detected your speed accurately as well. The device is one of the most cost effective GPS’s out there as well.

The BAD

This device “DIED” after 10 Months. Due to procrastination and their crappy support hours at the time I missed the 1 yr warranty return. The device was able to be plugged into the computer and you could see all the data on the GPS, As soon as you turned on the GPS it Froze and crashed.

Tom Tom One 3rd Edition (Number 2)

I bought this BRAND NEW from Futureshop for our trip to the states. I didn’t want to have to install the memory hogging Tom Tom software that tries to basically stuff itself into every orifice of my computer system. Because I did NOT do a sync in the first month Tom Tom does not allow you to get new Maps after! To top it off I somehow bought a refurbished device. The Tom Tom person said it would have been on the box somewhere. I don’t know how it would have been refurbrished when I bought it brand new from Futureshop and the box and the plastic were all intact.

The second idiot thing that Tom Tom said was that if you buy a referb you only get one update within the first month and that is it. If you miss it then to bad for you. When I called in they could tell my device software was almost 2 years old!

When I asked them where in their documentation in or on the box that it talks about there stance on updates they said it was on their website. I then asked them where in the device box or manual did it tell me to go to the website to go look up these details on their update policy? They said there wasn’t any and that (get this) I should have known better and gone to the site to look up that they had such ass backward stance on their updates.

I talked to the manager and he said he could not help me either.

Fine! They want to play hardball then let’s play hardball.

Check soon for my post on “How to get free Tom Tom ONE updates”! I will document how you too can get free updates for your Tom Tom device without paying them a darn cent! I am sure that if you look hard enough there are other people who are so disgruntled with Tom Tom that they are sharing their map updates in Torrents.
