Windows 7 COD4 Punkbuster fix

This post will go over how to get Call of Duty 4 (COD4) working on Windows 7. I never had any issue with this on vista how ever if you are having some issues with COD4 on Vista you might want to try the Windows 7 COD4 Punkbuster fix.

I tried playing COD4 tonight for the first time since I upgraded to Windows 7. When I started playing I noticed that after 2 minutes or so I got kicked due to a Punk Buster Timeout. From what I can gather this issue is due to you not having the 2 punk buster services installed. If they are installed the issue is most likely they are not set to be automatically started or “Allowed” to interact with the desktop.

Open services (START – SEARCH – Services) and then look for these items.

If they are not there you are going to need to download and install the Punk Buster Services. I originally found out about the installer from this website: http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsvcfaq.php

If they are installed (or after you install them) check the properties of the service. You should make sure that is is being operated by the system account. Here’s a screen shot:

Next make sure both services are set to Automatic and make sure that they are both started.

Just to make sure that everything is ok you should also make sure to run the Punk Buster manual updater. You can get the manual Punk buster updater here: http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php

Once it is downloaded make sure to add COD4 to the list of games and then hit the update button. This will make sure that you are running the latest version of COD4. If you follow all of these steps you should be able to get Cod4 working on Windows 7. Let me know of this fixes the COD4 punkbuster issue in Windows 7.
